Why we are repeatedly frustrated with our careers

Many of us are taught throughout our lives that working hard, going to a good school, and getting that dream job will be the answer to our happiness, when, in my opinion, that’s only one piece of the puzzle.

If you were anything like me you showed up to your first job and promptly realized you weren’t prepared. And then further along the road I thought was I told a lie my whole life?

I thought that focusing on achieving a title, salary, or the *best* organization would mean everything would be great, but I was actually setting myself up for disappointment.

Why?

Because it leaves out most of the things that actually make us happy. I’m talking about your values, the people you work with, what makes your heart sing, your greatest strengths, your purpose, the environment that best serves you, etc…

When we miss this, we often think “if I just get more experience, or can get the next promotion, then I’ll be happy”

But sacrificing our happiness now leads to more resentment towards our current work, and can lead to more confusion about what we truly love and are passionate about, often keeping us in the same cycle. And we all know this quote from Einstein:

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results“

So what to do?

As much as you can, take a step back and do the introspective work. Step out of the competition and day to day grind. Catch yourself if you are thinking “Once I have XYZ then I’ll be happy”

One small step is just thinking about what your ideal day would look like. Imagine you could do anything at all, but assuming there is still work involved in your day. Would you start your work early? Late? Would you be creating all day? Collaborating with others? Researching? Training? Leading? Etc…

Because at the end of the day the goal really isn’t to have the highest salary, the best title, or be part of the most well known company, is it? It’s to feel fulfilled, satisfied, at peace, inspired, excited, [and/or insert your desire here].

Though, once you are fulfilled, you may just easily fall into the salary, title, or dream job you’ve been yearning for. I’ve seen it many times before :)
